Abstract: The dataset is an inventory of trees along canopy roads, specifically those trees within 20 feet of the road edge and greater than 17 inches "Diameter at Breast Height" (DBH). DBH which has been standardized at 54" above the ground.

FGDC and ESRI Metadata:

Metadata elements shown with blue text are defined in the Federal Geographic Data Committee's (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). Elements shown with a green asterisk (*) will be automatically updated by ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog adds hints indicating which FGDC elements are mandatory; these are shown with gray text.

Process step:
Process description:
In 2001 and 2004 canopy road trees were inventoried (inventory was paid for in part by a grant from the Forida Division of Forestry). The purpose of the inventory was to provide a "snapshot" in time of the large canopy road trees. Trees are typically measured in "Diameter at Breast Height" (DBH) which has been standardized at 54" above the ground. Trees greater than 17" DBH within 20 feet of the road edge were inventoried. Larger trees contribute the most to the canopy effect. They also are older and may be more likely to develop problems as they age. Field contractors initially collected a GPS location for each tree that met the > 17" DBH criteria and also collected attribute data related to the tree's size, species and health (condition). The species, DBH, and condition of the tree can be used to calculate a general estimated value of the tree, in terms of its contribution to the landscape. It does not give an actual appraisal of the tree, which requires a much more detailed analysis. But it does provide a general guide to the tree’s worth. On-going maintenance of the dataset will include an annual inspection of critical or dead trees to determine whether the tree has been removed. Trees that have been removed will be coded as removed, but will not be deleted from the database. Comprehensive re-inventorying of the canopy road trees is planned on a ten-year cycle.
